Question 1 - 3

1. In our opinion, social networking is simply a way for people to interact with others online. There are several social networking sites such as facebook, myspace, friendster, etc. Social networking can come in the form of chatting in chatrooms and e-mails.

2. Social networking can bring several dangers to users. If they are not careful, they might be exposed to:

• Viruses and worms (infected e-mails and false advertisements)

• Identity theft (revealing important personal facts or via hackers)

• Sexual victim (in the case of young children)

• Spam

• Insecurity due to the fact that the people you meet online may be hackers or on a false identity.

• Fraud (money schemes and cheated by random people)

3. There are benefits for social networking:

• Meeting new friends

• Maintaining contact between existing friends (e.g. overseas or busy with working life)

• Building up on communication skills

• Obtaining information ( from e-mails and advertisements)

SUMMARY OF ARTICLES

SOCIAL NETWORK USERS ARE LEAVING THEMSELVES OPEN TO FRAUD

A study from web security advisory group found that one in four people using social networking sites have posted confidential or personal information on their online profile, making them vulnerable to identify fraud.

The research also found that 13 percent of social networkers have posted information photos of other people online without their consent.

Those using wireless networks are not securing their data adequately, with fingers showing 7.8 million people in the U.K have unsecured internet access.

An article from pcworld.com ( report refuse claims of social networking dangers)

A study released y the National School Boards Association debunks the common assumption that MySpace and other social networking sites are breeding grounds for sexual predators seeking to harm students.

The study, which surveyed students between the ages of 9 and 17, parents and school district leaders, found that only 0.08 percent of the more than 1,200 students surveyed had actually met with someone in person that they had encountered online.

4 percent of students said they have had conversations on a social network that made them uncomfortable.

Less than 3 percent of students said that unwelcome strangers have tried repeatedly o communicate with them and 2 percent reported that a stranger they met online tried to meet them in person.

School district leaders seem to believe that negative experiences with social networking are more common than students and parents report.

survey about social networking

-From survey of 20 students in MD all the 20 students use social networking.
-3 of us use social networking except Khairi. Khairi only surf internet for school research. He never use internet for social networking because he has no email.

- Most popular sites:
1st - Facebook

2nd - Friendster
3rd - Myspace

- From our survey, they social networking because:
1) Find new friends.
2) Communicate with friends inside /outside Brunei/ keep in touch.
3) Update life/sharing life.
4) For fun
5) Surfing/Chatting
6) Gain knowledge
7) upload/download pictures/videos.

- Majority said yes that are not willing to share something during social networking. eg. phone & address because privacy is priority for them. they dont want people to become stalker.

BUT one student said that he or she is willing to share everything during social networking.
